Dear Professor Shi,
Last night I encountered a piece of writing by Professor Huang Jinzhang and was saddened to learn that Professor Fang Jingmin of Matsuyama University was fatally injured by a car or bus on the streets of Shanghai. I understand from Professor Shengli FENG that there will be a memorial service on September 26 for him in Japan.
I would like to express my condolences to Professor Fang's family and his colleagues and friends who will be at this memorial service. I first met Professor Fang about 5 years ago at Harvard University when he was here for a year's visit. Then I have seen him again 3 or 4 times on professional meetings, including the most recent IACL meeting in Tianjin, and a NACCL conference last year in Michigan. Professor Fang always struck me as an immensely sincere person who was always eager to discuss Chinese linguistics issues with any scholar, and who was highly open in his opinion when dealing with colleagues of different persuasions. Every time I met him, I came away with the impression that he was doing all he could, more than many others around him, for the promotion of Chinese linguistics and enhancement of linguistic research among Chinese scholars. He will be greatly missed.
Again, please convey my condolences to Professor Fang's wife and children, and please tell them to take care of themselves and keep well--for nothing is more important for Professor Fang to rest in peace than to know that his family are well....
Sincerely, Jim Huang -- --------------------------------------------------------- C.-T. James Huang Professor of Linguistics Harvard University 305 Boylston Hall Cambridge, MA 02138
