This course focuses on research proposals and the selection of suitable methods of analysis for research in Chinese Sociolinguistics, the study of Language in large-scale Urban Environments in particular. The focus in the course will be on the following issues:
•(1) The study of local 'urbanization' and 'industrialization', •(2) The dialect situation resulting from industry-related 'migration', •(3) The migration-related 'language contact' situation, •(4) The developing 'interactional sociolinguistic setting', •(5) The establishment of social-class distinctions and sociolinguistic identities. In order to get these issues into perspective the following theoretical orientations will be discussed:
1. Language planning 2. Language spread 3. Language contact studies 4. Language accommodation 5. Language choice behavior 6. Social identity theory
The course allows a characterization of the current Chinese language situation and will assist in the selection and/or evaluation of a research procedure, data processing, and paper writing. The following data collection techniques will be discussed:
1. Questionnaire research 2. Participant observation 3. Unobtrusive measurement 4. Interviews and recording Where applicable the topic will be illustrated with Chinese data. Participants in this course will be given the opportunity to present their research or research plans.
